1951 Franklin Half Dollar - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

1951 WDDR-004 is a doubled die reverse on the 1951 Franklin half dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. The central doubling covers the upper bell structure's left side, the upper bell supports' left side and their tops, the clapper, the bell's bottom, and the eagle's talons and tail feathers. Obverse Stage A has a curving scratch left of the top of the date's first 1, and circular scratches, following the rim, through the lettering of IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY. On Obverse Stage B the curving scratch at the 1 is weaker but still visible, and the circular scratches are gone. Reverse Stage A has a short but strong gouge beneath the bell yoke's left end. Two parallel SW-to-NE scratches cross the bottom right of the E and reach the R in AMERICA, a short vertical gouge lies below the E's right side, and two parallel scratches head SE from the base of the second U in UNUM. There is also a die clash mark above the right side of the bell. On Reverse Stage B the yoke gouge can still be seen, but the other Stage A markers are gone. Tony Russo submitted the variety.
