1951 Franklin Half Dollar - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

1951 WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1951 Franklin half dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling is central: it shows along the bell's bottom and on the left side of both the upper bell structure and the upper bell supports. On the obverse, right of the base of the R's vertical bar in LIBERTY is a small gouge, and two small gouges lie in the field right of the lower nose. On the reverse, two short parallel scratches run SSE from the base of the second U in UNUM, and in PLURIBUS, short scratches run south from the R's bottom right and from the I's base. A north-south scratch crosses the E of E PLURIBUS UNUM (EPU), a SW-to-NE scratch lies above the O in DOLLAR, and several SW-to-NE scratches cross the lettering on the upper bell. Tony Russo submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
