1951 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-002

Description

DDO-002, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse on the 1951-D Washington quarter with strong spread on LIBERTY, listed as Cherrypickers FS-101; Wexler gives it as FS-25-1951D-101 and notes it was removed in the 6th Edition. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records a strong counterclockwise spread from a pivot near 6 o'clock on LIBERTY. On the obverse a scratch runs from the base of the E to the base of the R in LIBERTY, a WSW/ENE crack crosses the upper forehead, and an east-west crack passes through the upper hair. On the reverse two short parallel scratches head ESE from the base of the O in OF. Kevin Flynn submitted it, and CONECA lists it as 2-O-V. VarietyVista credits Lee Hiemke and gives the obverse as ODV-005. Under UVC-0757 and DMR-004, an early stage A and a middle stage B are unconfirmed. Stage C, late, shows a crack across the upper hair, a crack on the forehead, a scratch joining the bases of ER in LIBERTY, and a crack down the eagle's right wing.
