1951-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003
Error
Description
Strong extra thickness on both IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY defines DDO-003 for the 1951-D Washington quarter, a level of doubling intensity that elevates this variety above many of the lighter-spread DDOs cataloged for the series. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-0758 and DMR-005, documenting three die stages with a particularly informative Stage C: while Stage A and Stage B remain at early and mid die state respectively (both unconfirmed), Stage C records a die crack developing across the bust at late die state, with the reverse also reaching LDS. John Flanagan's Washington quarter obverse, in production since 1932, places IN GOD WE TRUST in small letters below Washington's chin and LIBERTY along the upper rim — two inscription groups that span the full vertical extent of the obverse. The die crack across the bust at Stage C provides a vivid diagnostic for late die state specimens, as cracks through the portrait area are visible and distinctive. Denver struck approximately 35.35 million Washington quarters in 1951, a moderate mintage for the series. The obverse carries the ODV-005 designation, identifying a specific obverse design variant. Strong extra thickness across both major inscription groups suggests a substantial hub misalignment that displaced the secondary impression uniformly enough to affect elements on opposite sides of the obverse — the upper LIBERTY and the lower IGWT — indicating a broad rather than localized doubling event. Collectors should examine LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST at 10-15x magnification, looking for noticeably broadened letter strokes compared to normally hubbed dies, then check for the Stage C die crack across the bust to determine the die state of their specimen.
