1950-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Third in the VarietyVista catalog for 1950-S Washington Quarter RPMs, documented under UVC-0742 and DMR-008. Four die states trace the die from early use through late deterioration: Stage A is EDS but unconfirmed. Stage B is MDS but unconfirmed. Stage C reaches LMDS with the reverse showing general deterioration and die scratches running N-S in front of the profile. Stage D advances to LDS with a die chip on the wing under E of AMERICA and a light die crack on the forehead. No specific repunch direction or cross-references have been noted. The two unconfirmed early stages and two confirmed later states suggest early specimens either have not been examined in detail or are scarce among the surviving population. San Francisco struck Washington Quarters in 1950 in 90% silver during the post-war era. The die scratches running N-S in front of the profile at Stage C provide an accessible diagnostic, as their position on the open field area makes them visible without high magnification on reasonably preserved specimens.
