1950 (D) Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001 / DDR-001

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-194 and DMR-002 and cross-referenced as FS-801, the 1950-D Roosevelt dime DDR-001 is the doubled die reverse Wexler numbers WDDR-001. Wexler writes the Cherrypickers number as FS-10-1950D-801 (014). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a very strong CCW spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the flame, the lower left of the torch holder, and most elements of the branches on both sides. Wexler comments that the first hubbing did not sink deep into the die, since the doubling stays central and does not reach the lettering around the rim. On the obverse a chip sits above the nostril. On the reverse a short scratch runs south from the lower right of the first S of STATES, and a scratch runs east from the upper right of the mintmark to the torch holder. Kevin Flynn submitted the coin, with an upgraded coin courtesy of Joe Feld, and CONECA lists the die as 1-R-I. VarietyVista, crediting Bill Fivaz, records a strong spread to the east on the torch, leaves and E PLURIBUS, and to the west on UNUM, leaves and flame. It lists stages A and B (early and middle die states) as unconfirmed, and at stage C both sides are in a late die state.
