Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1950-D 1¢ WRPM-022, this Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a D/D repunched mintmark with the secondary impression tilted or rotated relative to the primary — indicating the Denver mintmark punch was held at a different angle during the corrective second application, creating a rotational offset between the two D impressions. Obverse die markers include a die clash at the throat area of Lincoln's portrait, where an impression from the opposing reverse die was transferred during an impact without a planchet between the dies. The reverse exhibits a die scratch running northwest from the lower left side of the E in EPU (E PLURIBUS UNUM), positioned just above the top of the left wheat stalk. The throat die clash is particularly informative because it documents that this die pair experienced at least one clashing event during production, adding another layer of variety interest to the repunched mintmark already present on the obverse. The Lincoln Wheat Cent was designed by Victor David Brenner for the obverse portrait and features the wheat ears reverse design that served from 1909 through 1958. Struck at the Denver Mint in 1950 in the standard bronze composition of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The 1950-D had a mintage of approximately 334.9 million pieces, providing a large population from which variety collectors can search for this specific RPM. The combination of a tilted repunched mintmark with die clash evidence on the same die pair creates a multi-feature variety that documents two distinct anomalous events — one during die preparation (the RPM) and one during coin production (the clash).
