Description

Cross-referenced as Cohen 50D-B403 and Hardy 50D-4EL+12 (12/18/2015), this 1950-D Lincoln Wheat Cent from Cuds on Coins displays a BIE die break — a die chip between B and E of LIBERTY creating a raised vertical bar resembling the letter I. The EL+ Hardy designation indicates a break of three-quarters extending below the lowest letter level, a substantial chip. Note: Hardy has 4 listings for a BIE with a die clash at the throat; it is possible they are all the same die, and more examples are needed to determine if this represents a progression sequence. BIE die breaks are among the most popular Lincoln Cent specialties because the extra letter between B and E is immediately recognizable. The 1950-D was struck at Denver in 95% copper and 5% tin-and-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, during the final decade of the wheat ears reverse.
