1950-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-021

Description

Identified by an unusual X-shaped pattern of die scratches to the right of the mint mark, this 1950-D Lincoln Wheat Cent carries a repunched mint mark cataloged by the Wexler Team as WRPM-021, showing a D over D with the secondary impression tilted at a rotated angle. Additional obverse die markers include a slightly curving north-south die scratch above the L in LIBERTY and a light die scratch running south-southwest from the lower left side of the mint mark. On the reverse, a long thick die gouge runs east-west under the E in STATES, and north-south die scratches pass through the upper area of the right vertical bar of the N in CENT. The X-shaped die scratch formation near the mint mark is a particularly useful diagnostic, as this pattern is uncommon and provides rapid visual confirmation of the die pair. The 1950-D Wheat Cent had a mintage of over 334 million pieces, and the Denver Mint's prolific output during this period generated numerous repunched mint mark varieties as hand-punched mint marks were applied to individual working dies before master die integration was adopted.
