1950 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-003

Description

1950-D WRPM-003 is a repunched mint mark on the 1950-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as D/D/D South and Tilted (Rotated): the mint mark was punched three times, with the extra impressions lying south and turned. Wexler follows the obverse through six stages. Stage A has two SE-running field scratches below and right of the E in WE, crossed by a scratch heading NE from the top of the head so that together they form an X. On Stage B die polishing has cut those scratches below WE down to one; new are a gouge heading east from the bow tie's top, a N/S scratch right of the Y in LIBERTY, a gouge over the right side of the T in LIBERTY, and a very thin crack that wanders north from the back of the ear into the hair below the W of WE; a second branch heads west toward the back of the head (Wexler notes it is too thin to photograph). On Stage C the ear-to-head crack is stronger and a crack runs south from the base of the 9 in the date. Stage D adds a chip above the I of LIBERTY. Stage E adds a scratch heading NE from the lower bust to the 9 of the date, and on Stage F that scratch is weaker and shorter. On the reverse, Stage A has a crack on the right side of the right wheat stalk, level with the last S of STATES and ending at the stalk's lower right edge. On Stage B that crack is larger and longer. Wexler calls Stage C a second reverse, with a crack heading north from the top edge of the left wheat stalk. Stage D adds an arching scratch left of the C in CENT and a N/S scratch to the right of CENT. Stage E adds a scratch heading south from the base of the O in OF, and Stage F a gouge above and between the E and P of E PLURIBUS. Submitters were John A. Wexler (Stage A), John Bordner (Stage B), Paul Funaiole (Stage C) and Brian Ribar (Stages D, E and F). CONECA lists it as RPM #4 and Coppercoins as 1950D-1MM-004. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
