1950 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

1950-D WRPM-001 is a repunched mint mark on the 1950-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as D/D West: the secondary D lies west of the primary. Wexler follows the obverse through five stages. Stage A has a scratch that heads SW to the bust from the lower loop; crisscrossing scratches that form several X markers left of the mint mark; two scratches heading SE from the date's 5 on its right side and meeting in a V under the 0; a thick gouge in the field heading north from above the E of LIBERTY; an arcing field gouge low behind the head, north of the Y in LIBERTY; a long scratch heading SW from the Y's upper left and ending in the field below it; and a scratch heading NE from the top left of the same Y. Stage B adds an arching scratch in the field below IN, and the scratch above the E of LIBERTY has thinned. Stage C adds a scratch right of the R in TRUST and a N/S scratch to the lower right of its U. On Stage D a crack runs north from the upper head to the bottom of the W in WE; by Stage E that crack has widened, passes through the W and now reaches the rim. On the reverse, Stage A shows N/S scratches on the left wheat stalk; a N/S scratch between wheat kernels at the upper left of the U in UNITED; a short N/S scratch left of the upper part of the first E in E PLURIBUS; two N/S scratches within the E of ONE and one within its O; a NE/SW scratch left of the E in CENT and another inside that E, low; and N/S scratches inside the N of CENT, both low and high. Stage B adds scratches that form several X markers over the N of ONE; NW/SE scratches from the top of that N, ending between and below the UR of PLURIBUS; a long NW/SE scratch from the O of OF (bottom edge) to the left wheat stem (upper edge); and an E/W scratch at the end of the right wheat stem. Stage C adds N/S scratches inside the O of OF. Stage D adds diagonal scratches in the lower right of the O in ONE, a scratch inside the U of PLURIBUS, a scratch heading NE from the M of AMERICA to a point above its I, and a scratch heading NE through the TA of STATES. On Stage E the TA scratch is weak. John Bordner submitted Stages A, B, D and E, and Thomas Kalantzis Stage C. CONECA lists it as RPM #1, Coppercoins as 1950D-1MM-001 and Crawford as CRPM-001. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties. Wexler and CONECA list it on their Top 100 RPM lists.
