1950-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 1950-D Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-005 tracks an evolving die crack and associated die chip through four progressive stages. Die markers UVC-339 / DMR-007: Stage A with obverse and reverse at EDS; Stage B with both at MDS; Stage C with a die crack between the 9 and 5 of the date at LDS, reverse at LDS; Stage D with a minute die chip in the lower 5 of the date at the end of the crack at VLDS, reverse at VLDS. The progression from crack at LDS to chip at the crack terminus at VLDS documents how structural failure advances — the crack propagated until a small fragment separated, producing the die chip. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, struck at the Denver Mint during the early Korean War period as Brenner's wheat ears reverse entered its final decade of production.
