1950-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Bearing a clockwise spread on the date and harboring a dual attribution as an over mintmark, this 1950 Denver Franklin Half Dollar is the first WDDO in the Wexler catalog for this date. Attributed by the Wexler Team (Wexler Variety ID: 1950-D 50¢ WDDO-001), the reverse is also listed as WOMM-001 (D/S) — a D over S indicating a San Francisco punch was used initially before correction with a Denver D. Obverse markers: die scratch curving ESE from bottom right of E in LIBERTY, parallel die scratches NW to SE through lower I in LIBERTY. Reverse markers: horizontal die scratch under E in STATES, die scratch SE from lower right of bell clapper, parallel die scratches SSE from bottom of B in PLURIBUS through M in UNUM, parallel die scratches NNW from top of I and top of B in PLURIBUS. The D/S over mintmark suggests at least one die prepared for San Francisco was redirected to Denver, adding production history context to this variety.
