1949 (D) Jefferson Nickel - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-003

Description

Third in the Wexler Team's catalog of repunched mintmarks for the 1949 Denver Jefferson Nickel, WRPM-003 documents another working die where the D mintmark required repositioning after the initial hand-punch attempt. While WRPM-001 holds the primary designation, the existence of at least three cataloged Denver RPMs for 1949 points to meaningful variety activity during a comparatively modest production year. The 1949-D mintage fell below mid-1940s boom levels, yet hand-punching continued generating imprecisions regardless of output volume — every working die underwent the same manual mintmark application. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse provides the visual context for the D mintmark, which sits adjacent to the building's east wing. RPM collecting has developed into one of the more accessible areas of die variety numismatics for Jefferson Nickels, where low cost of circulated examples allows collectors to examine large quantities. WRPM-003's catalog position suggests characteristics distinct from both WRPM-001 and WRPM-002, requiring careful comparison against published diagnostics.
