1949-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Exhibiting strong Class VIII tilted hub doubling, the 1949-D WDDR-002 Jefferson nickel shows a portion of an extra step to the right of Monticello's main staircase. Class VIII doubling results from a tilted hub contacting the die at an angle, producing a design element that appears shifted rather than spread in a single directional axis. The strength of the doubling on this variety makes the phantom step readily visible under moderate magnification. Obverse die markers include weak die scratches to the left of Jefferson's forehead. On the reverse, a die clash is visible through the second O of MONTICELLO, indicating the obverse and reverse dies made contact without a planchet between them at some point during this die's service life.
