Description

Sixth doubled die reverse for the inaugural-year 1948-D Franklin Half Dollar, this variety shows medium spread northwest on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED, HALF DOLLAR, the dots separating design elements, and the right side of the bell clapper — a comprehensive distribution of doubling affecting John R. Sinnock's Liberty Bell reverse. Tracked under UVC-298 and DMR-008 in the VarietyVista system, three die states document the variety: Stages A and B remain unconfirmed, while Stage C captures both dies in late die state with the obverse listed as DDO-006 — creating a die marriage where both the obverse and reverse carry doubled die designations. This DDO/DDR die marriage makes specimens particularly attractive to collectors, as a single coin preserves two distinct hubbing anomalies. The 1948-D was the first Denver Mint issue of the Franklin Half Dollar series, launched to replace the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Denver's inaugural Franklin Half Dollar production established the die preparation protocols that would govern the series through its final year in 1963, and six doubled die reverses from this first-year issue indicates that the transition to new dies introduced multiple hubbing alignment challenges.
