1947-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

An S/S Northwest variety from the San Francisco Mint, this 1947-S Washington Silver Quarter was documented by VarietyVista. Die markers UVC-0586 / DMR-018 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with numerous die scratches on the reverse at MDS, a die crack across upper hair and forehead at MDS, and a light die crack on the bust above 19 of the date; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The convergence of reverse die scratches and two separate obverse die cracks at Stage B indicates substantial mid-life deterioration across both faces simultaneously. Designed by John Flanagan, struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm. The northwestward displacement means the initial S was placed slightly southeast of the intended position before a corrective second punch established the final location on the die.
