Description

A close spread characterizes this 1947-S Washington Quarter WDDR-001, affecting STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS, QUARTER, and both branch ends on the heraldic eagle reverse. The close classification indicates minimal but confirmed hub displacement, producing secondary impressions visible under careful magnification. Obverse die markers anchor attribution: a short die gouge extends from the left side of the Y in LIBERTY, a die scratch runs south-southwest to north-northeast to the left of the upper lip on Washington's portrait, and a die crack runs across the base of the bust. These three obverse features create a reliable fingerprint distinct from any other 1947-S die. No significant reverse die markers beyond the doubling itself are noted. This 90% silver San Francisco Mint issue was struck during the postwar era when San Francisco mintages remained relatively modest compared to Philadelphia.
