Description

Light spread on the 47 of the date identifies this 1947-S Lincoln Wheat Cent as DDO-001, the primary doubled die obverse cataloged by VarietyVista for the date with die classification UVC-1760 and die marriage DMR-011. The confirmed Stage B shows numerous north-south die scratches developing on the obverse at mid die state, with the reverse also at mid die state — these progressive scratches serve as useful die markers for identifying later-strike specimens. Early and late die states remain unconfirmed. The mintmark carries variety designation MMS-007, the sans serif variant — an S mintmark lacking the small terminal strokes (serifs) that typically extend from the letter's endpoints. Sans serif mintmarks on 1940s San Francisco cents are collected as a subspecialty within the Lincoln Cent series, adding mintmark variety interest to the doubled die attribution. Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait was in its thirty-ninth year on 95% copper composition at 19mm, paired with the wheat stalks reverse that would continue through 1958. The light spread confined to the 47 portion of the date — the final two digits — suggests localized hub displacement during die manufacture. Examine the 4 and 7 in the date for the light spread, and check for north-south die scratches on mid die state specimens, noting the sans serif S mintmark.
