1947-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-006

Description

Attributed as Wexler Variety ID: 1947-S 5¢ WRPM-006 and photographed by Brian Ribar, this San Francisco Jefferson Nickel carries a repunched mintmark from the immediate post-war years. With World War II freshly concluded, the San Francisco Mint resumed normal nickel production after the wartime silver alloy composition ended in 1945, and mintmark punches were once again applied by hand to individual working dies. Each die received its S mintmark through a separate manual operation, and even slight repositioning between strikes left overlapping impressions visible under magnification. Felix Schlag's original Jefferson portrait and Monticello reverse, in continuous use since 1938, provided the canvas for these varieties. The WRPM-006 designation indicates at least six repunched mintmark varieties have been cataloged for the 1947-S date, reflecting active die shop operations during the post-war production ramp. Ribar's photographic documentation preserves the diagnostics that allow collectors to distinguish this RPM from others on the same date. Hand-punched mintmarks were standard until 1989, when the Mint began placing them directly on the master die.
