1947-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-004

Description

The 1947-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-004 is a repunched mintmark variety on the San Francisco Jefferson Nickel, struck in the standard 75% copper and 25% nickel composition that resumed after the wartime silver alloy ended in 1945. Obverse die markers reveal that doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST originates from a doubled master die rather than a working die event — an important distinction since master die doubling may appear on multiple working dies from the same master. Die scratches running southwest-to-northeast through TRUS in TRUST provide additional obverse diagnostics. The reverse carries extensive markers making attribution straightforward: strong die scratches run north-northwest to south-southeast between the first three columns of Monticello, short die scratches run north-south inside the left arch, and a die scratch extends south from the facade through the UN in UNITED. These prominent reverse scratches remain visible even on well-circulated examples where the repunched mintmark may be softened by wear.
