1947-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002
Error
Description
The 1947-S WRPM-002 is a repunched mintmark variety on the San Francisco Mint Jefferson Nickel, showing an S/S with the secondary impression offset to the north. Cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #2. The obverse carries doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST originating from a doubled master die rather than from the working die — an important distinction indicating the motto doubling is shared across multiple working dies from the same master, while the repunched mintmark is unique to this specific die. On the reverse, multiple markers aid attribution: a series of north-south die scratches appear in Monticello's right arch, with a heavy north-south scratch above the right arch and another inside the left arch. Additional markers include similarly oriented scratches inside and below the left small window. The concentration of scratches around Monticello's architectural details provides a constellation of markers that make this variety identifiable even when the repunched mintmark is partially obscured by wear. The 1947-S Jefferson Nickel saw solid San Francisco production, keeping the base date available for variety searching.
