1947 Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002 / DDO-002

Description

1947 WDDO-002 is a doubled die obverse on the 1947 Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as DDO-002. Both catalogs cite it as FS-101 in the Cherrypickers' Guide (Wexler writes FS-10-1947-101). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties sees extra thickness best on the LIB of LIBERTY, with doubling and tripling toward the center on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIB, the lips, below the nose and on the date; the lower J of the designer's initials shows at least five impressions. On the obverse a strong NNE/SSW scratch at the bridge of the nose comes with a set of smaller scratches, small SSW scratches come off the eye, more SSW scratches come off the lower nose and lips, and NE/SW scratches sit between the brow and the RT of LIBERTY. On the reverse a NW/SE scratch sits above the lower left oak leaf. Joe Feld submitted the coin, and CONECA lists the die as 2-O-II. VarietyVista, crediting Bill Fivaz, records a medium spread with strong extra thickness on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date and the designer's initials. Under its marker codes UVC-144 and DMR-003, both sides are in an early die state at stage A. At stage B, a middle die state, scratches run east from the back of the bust point and a double die clash shows on the left side of the reverse. Stage C, a late die state, is unconfirmed.
