1947 Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1947 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1947 Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. The L of LIBERTY shows extra thickness most clearly, and a spread toward the center appears on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date and the designer's initials. Obverse Stage A: scratches mark the underside of the nose, a series of NNE/SSW scratches lies on the nose west of the eye, and a scratch runs west between the chin and the lower lip. On Obverse Stage B those scratches are gone; a scratch runs NE from the 4's horizontal bar to the 7's horizontal bar, and a wavy E/W scratch sits in the field over the front of the hair. Reverse Stage A: NE/SW scratches cross the N in UNUM through its top and bottom openings, near its center. From PLURIBUS's S a scratch heads SW across the second U, a NE/SW scratch sits inside the lower opening of UNUM's second U, and a series of NW scratches links the upper oak leaves with the flame. Reverse Stage B has lost most Stage A markers; the key survivors are weaker scratches in UNUM, at the N and the second U. A small gouge (dot) sits on the underside of the N's center bar in ONE, nearer the top of the opening. Joe Feld submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
