Description

Tracked by VarietyVista with identifiers UVC-1755 and DMR-007, this 1947 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die reverse presents extreme extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and both wheat ears, ranking it among the strongest reverse doubled dies of the immediate postwar era. The intensity of the doubling on both the motto and the wheat ear design elements makes this variety accessible even at lower magnification. Four die stages document an extended service life: Stage A is early die state, currently unconfirmed. Stage B is mid die state, also unconfirmed. Stage C reaches reverse late die state while the obverse remains at mid die state, indicating the reverse die deteriorated faster. Stage D shows the reverse at very late die state with the obverse reaching late die state. This asymmetric die wear pattern, with the reverse consistently one stage ahead in deterioration, suggests the reverse die absorbed greater stress during striking, consistent with the deeper relief wheat ear design elements concentrating impact forces.
