Description

Documented on the inaugural year of the Roosevelt Dime series, this 1946-S DDR-019 displays a light spread on AMERICA, UNUM, ONE DIME, and the right stem. Attributed by VarietyVista, this variety carries a complex multi-stage die history spanning two UVC classifications. Under UVC-140 and DMR-048, Stage A remains unconfirmed at early die state, while Stage B develops die scratches southeast through the left stem at mid die state and strong die scratches on the nose at late die state. Under UVC-141 and DMR-049, Stage C shows the reverse in late die state with the obverse die changed, entering early-to-mid die state with the new obverse. The obverse of Stage B is identified as ODV-001, the obverse of Stage C as ODV-002, and the reverse carries the MMS-001 designation known as "Trumpet tail." The obverse die change between Stages B and C is significant, as it documents the Mint pairing the same doubled reverse die with two different obverse dies during the 1946-S production run. As a first-year Roosevelt Dime variety, DDR-019 connects to the very beginning of a series that continues in production today.
