Description

As a first-year issue of the Roosevelt Dime series, this 1946-S DDR-018 represents a multi-variety die of considerable interest. The reverse displays light spread on AMERICA, UNUM, and DIME, while the obverse is paired with ODV-001. The reverse die is further listed as RPM-021 and carries the MMS-001 designation — the distinctive "Trumpet tail" mintmark style. Die markers include UVC-139 and DMR-047. Three die stages are recorded: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed); and Stage C in late die state where the reverse is listed as RPM-021 with a die gouge through the middle of ME in DIME, while the obverse is also in late die state. The convergence of hub doubling, a repunched mintmark, an obverse die variety, and a distinctive mintmark style on one coin makes DDR-018 an unusually complex variety. The 1946-S Roosevelt Dime inaugurated the series honoring President Franklin D. Roosevelt following his death in 1945.
