Description

Bearing VarietyVista catalog designations UVC-119 and DMR-027, the 1946-S Roosevelt Silver Dime DDR-012 displays a light spread on UNITED and ONE on the reverse — the inaugural year of the Roosevelt Dime series, making doubled dies from this date particularly significant to collectors. John R. Sinnock's design replaced the Winged Liberty (Mercury) dime following Franklin Roosevelt's death in April 1945, and the 1946 issue marked the public's first encounter with the new portrait. This doubled die reverse was produced when the reverse hub impressed the working die with slight misalignment between successive impressions, doubling the affected lettering. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B where the reverse reaches Mid Die State while the obverse shows Late Die State characteristics, and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed). The obverse die paired with this reverse is identified as ODV-001, and the reverse carries the MMS-001 designation indicating a "Trumpet tail" S mintmark — a distinctive mintmark style where the S has an elongated serif resembling a trumpet.
