1946-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, the 1946-S Roosevelt Silver Dime DDR-005 displays light spread on ONE DIME, ERICA of AMERICA, UNUM, and the right branch and leaves, cataloged as UVC-113 with die marker record DMR-021. Die stage progression is unusually detailed with four documented states: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid-die-state with a die scratch from the F of OF running south to a leaf and the reverse listed as RPM-004, Stage C at late die state with the scratch worn away and a minute die chip on the nostril at very late die state (VLDS), and Stage D at VLDS with a die scratch running southwest from the flame to the second group of leaves and die scratches in front of the forehead. The comments note that the obverse is ODV-001 and the reverse is listed as both RPM-004 and MMS-001 (Trumpet tail), creating a multi-variety die marriage where doubled die reverse, repunched mintmark, and mintmark style features coexist on the same coin. The 1946-S Roosevelt Dime holds special significance as the inaugural year of the series, designed by John R. Sinnock to honor Franklin D. Roosevelt. Struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver at 2.50 grams with a 17.9 mm diameter, the 1946-S represents the first San Francisco production of this design.
