1946 (S) Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001 / DDR-002

Description

DDR-002, which Wexler numbers WDDR-001, is a doubled die reverse on the 1946-S Roosevelt dime with a strong spread on UNITED STATES, the left branch and leaves and the torch, and a light spread on the E PLURIB of PLURIBUS. Both catalogs cite Cherrypickers FS-802; Wexler writes it FS-10-1946S-802 (011.6), and VarietyVista gives FS-502/802. Wexler describes a very strong westward spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM (heavier on the left), UNITED STATES, the torch flame and parts of the olive branch, with weaker doubling on the torch holder, ONE and parts of the oak branch. It cross-references the die as CONECA 2-R-IV and follows it through three stages. The obverse is a Type I and is also a doubled die, Wexler's WDDO-005, with a very close spread toward the center on the Y of LIBERTY and on WE TRUST. At Stage A its markers are a faint wavy gouge through the top crossbar of the E in LIBERTY, an arching NE/SW gouge near the fork of the Y, and a wavy east-west gouge through the middle of the B. At Stage B those remain, joined by a scratch heading south off the back of the head, short scratches running north from its upper right, a clash on the bridge of the nose and a rim cud beginning above the LI of LIBERTY, and the doubling is weaker. At Stage C the scratch behind the head has faded, the clash has been abraded away and the cud above the L and I is stronger. The reverse has a trumpet-tail mint mark and is also a repunched mint mark, Wexler's WRPM-002, an S/S Southeast. At Stage A a north-south scratch crosses the dot on the right and an ENE/WSW scratch crosses the base of the last A in AMERICA. At Stage B that marker has been abraded off, north-south scratches appear between the lower left olive leaf and the L of PLURIBUS, and scratches lie under the first U of PLURIBUS. At Stage C the secondary mint mark shows only at its bottom, a die chip sits above the B of PLURIBUS and that first U has been abraded away. John Bordner submitted Stage A and John A. Wexler Stage B. VarietyVista credits Tom Miller with the report. It gives the obverse as ODV-001 and notes that the reverse is listed as its RPM-002, with the trumpet-tail mint mark style MMS-001. Under its marker codes UVC-110 and DMR-018 it follows four stages, tracking the lower serif of the secondary mint mark. At Stage A the reverse is in an early die state with that serif strong, and the obverse is early as well. At Stage B the serif is still strong in a middle die state, with north-south scratches on the reverse; the obverse, also middle, shows the clash on the bridge of the nose and north-south scratches in front of the profile. At Stage C the serif is medium and both sides are in a late die state, with their scratches weak. At Stage D the serif is weak, the first U of PLURIBUS has been abraded away, and both sides are in a very late die state.
