1946-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-017

Description

Struck at the Denver Mint during the inaugural year of the Roosevelt Dime, this doubled die obverse displays strong Class VI extra thickness on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and John R. Sinnock's designer initials JS. Class VI doubling manifests as extra thickness rather than a visible secondary image, caused by the die distorting slightly during the hubbing process. The 1946-D holds special significance as the first year Roosevelt Dimes were produced, honoring President Franklin D. Roosevelt in silver composition. Obverse die markers include strong north-south die scratches on the nose, short north-south die scratches left of the ear, a die gouge to the right of the last T in TRUST, and two die gouges above the U in TRUST.
