1946-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

Sixth cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1946-D Roosevelt Dime in the Wexler system, this variety exhibits a Class V clockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 12 o'clock, showing best on the date. Class V rotational doubling results from the hub and die being slightly misaligned in their rotational axis during a secondary hub impression, causing design elements to shift along an arc — with elements furthest from the pivot point (here at 12 o'clock) displaying the greatest displacement. The date's position at 6 o'clock, diametrically opposite the pivot, makes it the primary attribution target. Die markers on the obverse include "Type I" designation with a north-south die scratch between B and E of LIBERTY and a die gouge between E and R of LIBERTY; the reverse shows east-west die scratches between the left and center openings of the M in DIME.
