Description

Among the earliest Roosevelt Dime doubled die varieties, the 1946-D DDO-022 exhibits light hub doubling spread from top to bottom on the date, the designer's initials JS (for John R. Sinnock), and the word TRUST in the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The top-to-bottom spread direction indicates the secondary hub impression shifted vertically, creating faint secondary contours beneath the primary design elements. Die markers UVC-754 and DMR-062 identify this working die, with three documented die states: Stage A in early die state, Stage B in mid die state, and Stage C where both the obverse and reverse reach late die state — all stages currently unconfirmed and awaiting further specimen documentation. The obverse is also cataloged as ODV-001 in the VarietyVista obverse die variety system. Attributed by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint issue comes from the inaugural year of the Roosevelt Dime series, introduced in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt following his death in 1945. The D-mintmark identifies production at the Denver Mint. Examine the date digits, the JS initials near the truncation of Roosevelt's bust, and TRUST for the subtle secondary contours characteristic of the light top-to-bottom spread.
