1946-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-040 with die marriage DMR-004, the 1946-D Roosevelt Dime DDO-002 displays medium spread on the date, on designer John R. Sinnock's initials (JS) from top to bottom, and on the Y of LIBERTY — a selective spread pattern affecting three distinct areas of the obverse. Struck from the ODV-001 obverse die variety, this is a first-year Roosevelt Dime variety from the Denver Mint, documenting hub doubling from the very first year of Sinnock's design that replaced the Mercury Dime. An unusually detailed four-stage die state progression is documented: early die state (EDS) is unconfirmed for both stages A and B, while stage C shows both obverse and reverse in late die state (LDS), and stage D reveals the die pair in very late die state (VLDS) — an extended service life suggesting this die pair was used until extreme deterioration forced retirement. The "top to bottom" doubling on the designer's initials indicates vertical displacement, and first-year DDO varieties from the 1946-D Roosevelt Dime hold particular significance for series specialists.
