Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista, the 1945-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003 on the Washington Silver Quarter shows medium spread on QUARTER DOLLAR, the left leaves, and the stem of the olive branch. The Washington Quarter was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm diameter. Die markers from VarietyVista are UVC-0579 and DMR-011, with three documented die states: Stage A at EDS is unconfirmed, Stage B at MDS shows weak die scratches running north-south on the left side of the reverse plus strong upside-down V die scratches to the left side of the R of LIBERTY on the obverse, and Stage C at LDS shows the reverse die scratches worn away with die cracks developing across the forehead and hair plus across the bust. Notably, VarietyVista records that the reverse also carries mintmark variety designation MMS-002 (Trumpet tail S mintmark) and is listed as IMM-001 (Inverted Mintmark), making this a combination doubled die reverse and mintmark variety. The trumpet tail mintmark style refers to a distinctive curved extension on the S mintmark that resembles a trumpet bell.
