1945 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark RPM-014

Description

Cataloged under UVC-216 and DMR-017, the 1945-S Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-014 shows an S/S Northeast repunched mintmark with the mint mark identified as MMS-006, the Ball Serif style — a combination of directional shift and mintmark style providing two independent attribution filters. The MMS-006 Ball Serif mintmark is a recognized diagnostic for a specific subgroup of 1945-S repunched mintmark varieties, narrowing the candidate field before the Northeast shift is confirmed under magnification. The 1945-S Wheat Cent was struck in 95% copper, 5% zinc brass at the San Francisco Mint during the final year of World War II, with Victor David Brenner's wheat ear reverse. Three die stages are documented. Stage A is early die state, confirmed. Stage B is mid-die state, unconfirmed. Stage C is late die state, unconfirmed. The confirmed Stage A early die state provides attribution anchoring when secondary mintmark detail is at its strongest. The MMS-006 Ball Serif style combined with the Northeast directional shift places RPM-014 in a well-defined position within the VarietyVista 1945-S catalog.
