Description

Carrying an S/S/S West, Serifs triple-punched mintmark with MMS-004 (Trumpet Tail) punch identification, this VarietyVista-cataloged 1945-S Lincoln Wheat Cent documents at least three separate punch applications from the San Francisco Mint. Die markers UVC-203 / DMR-004: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with die scratches North-South through RTY of LIBERTY at MDS and reverse at LDS; Stage C with die scratches very weak at LDS and reverse at VLDS. The North-South scratches through RTY of LIBERTY at Stage B provide a prominent visual attribution marker. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1945-S was produced during the final months of WWII. The serif notation indicates the secondary mintmark impressions show the serif features of the S punch letter.
