1945-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-024
Error
Description
The 1945-S RPM-024 Lincoln Wheat cent documents a repunched mint mark on one of the final wartime cents. Victor David Brenner's wheat ears reverse provides the canvas for this San Francisco variety. VarietyVista tracks it as UVC-1115 and DMR-027. The comments record this as an S over S West repunch — the secondary S punch was set slightly to the west of the primary before correction to the final position. The mint mark style is identified as MMS-004 (Trumpet Tail) — a distinctive punch style with a flared lower serif resembling an upturned trumpet bell. The die staged through three states: Stage A (early mid-die state) shows light north-south die scratches on the obverse and matching north-south die scratches through the NE of ONE on the reverse; Stage B is a middle die state (MDS, unconfirmed); Stage C is a late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). Collectors should look for the secondary S impression to the west of the primary under low-to-moderate magnification, then reference the Trumpet Tail punch style and die marker codes to confirm attribution. The Trumpet Tail designation is a useful stylistic anchor that narrows the punch family independently of the RPM offset direction.
