Description

San Francisco's trumpet-tail S mintmark punch (MMS-004) left a distinctive serif style on this 1945-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged as RPM-008 (UVC-210, DMR-011) with the S repunched south (S/S South). Three die stages are documented. Stage A is early and unconfirmed for supplementary markers. Stage B reveals a die clash at the throat at mid-die-state, with the reverse also at mid-state. Notably, this die is known to have struck at least one broadstruck planchet — a coin struck without the restraining collar — in this stage. By Stage C, the die clash has been polished away and both sides have reached late die state. The trumpet-tail mintmark style, with its distinctive elongated lower serif, is a recognized San Francisco punch variant from the mid-1940s and adds an additional dimension of study for collectors interested in mintmark punch types. The 1945-S Wheat cent was struck late in World War II. The progression from visible clash marks in Stage B to polished-away clash in Stage C demonstrates active Mint maintenance of working dies, and the known broadstrike proves the die produced striking errors beyond the repunching.
