1945 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-012

Description

Struck in .900 fine silver during the final year of World War II, the 1945 DDO-012 is a Washington quarter doubled die obverse showing medium spread on LIBERTY, the ribbon end, and the 5 of the date. Cataloged as UVC-0528 with die marker reference DMR-013, the variety progresses through three die stages: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, as does Stage B at mid-die-state. Stage C documents the obverse in late die state, with a die crack running down the eagle's right wing into the field on the reverse, also in late die state. The late-die-state crack on the eagle's wing provides a useful secondary diagnostic for collectors who have already identified the obverse doubling on LIBERTY and the date. Silver Washington quarters of 1945 were among the last struck before the massive post-war production increases that followed demobilization, and the medium spread on three prominent obverse elements makes this variety accessible to cherrypickers examining wartime-era quarters with moderate magnification.
