1945 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

1945 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1945 Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as DDO-001. Both list it as Cherrypickers FS-101; Wexler writes it FS-25-1945-101 (018). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records a Class I counterclockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY, on the lower queue, and on the designer's initials and the date. On the obverse a WSW/ENE crack crosses the upper forehead and another crosses the bottom of the bust. On the reverse a crack descends the eagle's right wing, and gouges sit between the D of UNITED and the first S of STATES. CONECA lists the die as 1-O-I and Breen as #4328; Jim Lafferty submitted it. VarietyVista, crediting Delma K. Romines, describes strong spread on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, and on the date, the designer's initials and the ribbon end. Under UVC-0517 and DMR-002, an early stage A and a middle stage B are unconfirmed; stage C has a crack on the forehead and both sides in a late state.
