1945 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-009

Description

Cataloged with UVC-0525 and DMR-010, this 1945 Washington Quarter exhibits a medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the 19 of the date, with a lighter spread visible on 45 and the letters LIBE of LIBERTY. The varying intensity of doubling across different design elements reflects the geometry of the hub misalignment, with areas closer to the pivot point showing less displacement. Three die stages have been documented. The late die state develops a die crack running across Washington's forehead and hair, consistent with the common forehead crack pattern seen across many Washington Quarter die marriages. Additional die gouges appear in the lower ER of AMERICA on the reverse, providing secondary identification markers. Struck in 90% silver (0.7734 oz ASW), the 1945 Washington Quarter represents the final year of wartime quarter production before the post-war period brought changes to Mint operations and output levels. DDO-009's medium spread on the motto and partial date makes it a moderately strong doubled die within the 1945 series, while the gradation from stronger doubling on IGWT and 19 to lighter effects on 45 and LIBE maps the mechanics of the hub shift.
