Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-0522 with die marriage DMR-007, this 1945 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter displays a light doubled die obverse with spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and extra thickness on the date and LIBERTY. Three die stages document the die's production life: Stage A represents the early die state, Stage B is mid-die state, and Stage C shows a die crack across the upper hair along with a die break on the bust above the 9 and 5 of the date, marking the late die state. The reverse also reached late die state by Stage C. The die break above the date digits in the late die state adds a secondary collectible feature beyond the primary doubled die attribution, as die breaks and die cracks are independently collected by some variety specialists. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, the 1945 Washington Quarter was produced during the final year of World War II when silver continued to be used for quarters despite wartime metal conservation measures affecting other denominations. John Flanagan's Washington portrait design was in its fourteenth year of production. The light spread across IN GOD WE TRUST combined with extra thickness on the date and LIBERTY provides multiple confirmation points for attribution across the obverse design elements.
