1945 Repunched Mintmark RPM-009

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista, this early-numbered RPM for the prolific 1945-P wartime Jefferson Nickel carries a repunched P mintmark with a mid-state reverse marker. Die markers: UVC-200, DMR-010. Stage A: EDS (unconfirmed). Stage B: Die gouge in lower E of AMERICA — MDS; obverse is MDS. Stage C: LDS (unconfirmed). The AMERICA die gouge at MDS aids rapid die confirmation independent of the mintmark displacement. As the 9th cataloged RPM for the 1945-P date, this was among the earlier discoveries within the population exceeding 73 documented varieties. Struck at Philadelphia in the wartime alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese (5.0 g, 21.21 mm), with the oversized P above Monticello mandated by Congress for identifying silver-content coins. The 1945 issue was the final year of wartime alloy before the 1946 return to standard copper-nickel.
