1945 Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as RPM-006 with die marker references UVC-197 and DMR-007, this 1945 wartime silver alloy Jefferson nickel displays a triple-punched mintmark with P/P/P displacement to the south and southeast. The large P above Monticello, unique to the 1942-1945 wartime issues, makes this the only era in which Philadelphia-minted nickels bore a visible mintmark, and multiple punching of that oversized letter created dramatic repunching varieties. Three stages track the die's evolution. In Stage A at early-to-mid die state, no inside upper loop is visible on the secondary mintmark, and the obverse is also at early-to-mid die state. By Stage B at mid die state, the inside upper loop of the secondary mintmark becomes visible, and the obverse has progressed to mid die state as well. Stage C at late die state remains unconfirmed. The progressive visibility of the secondary P's upper loop across die states provides a useful diagnostic for stage identification beyond the primary triple-punched displacement.
