Description

Medium doubling spread across QUARTER DOLLAR, the left stem, and AMERICA identifies DDR-005 for the 1944-P Washington Quarter, documented across three die stages under catalogue numbers UVC-0413 and DMR-038. Stage A is the early die state (unconfirmed). Stage B is the mid die state (unconfirmed). Stage C brings a die crack down the eagle's right wing and a die crack running from US of PLURIBUS to the wing under AMER of AMERICA as late die state reverse markers, combined with a die crack across the hair as a late die state obverse marker. The 1944-P Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver — the composition used on all Washington Quarters through 1964 — under John Flanagan's design. The Stage C reverse die cracks are substantial, running both along the eagle's wing and laterally across the reverse field, making late-die-state examples the most visually dramatic specimens in the DDR-005 population.
