1944 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-002 for the 1944 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter, this variety exhibits strong extra thickness on all reverse lettering, lower leaves, and stems, with separation on E PLURIBUS UNUM and the eagle's plume. The die spans four stages across two obverse pairings. Stages A through C use die markers UVC-0411 and DMR-036: reverse and obverse begin in early-mid state (A), advance to mid-die state (B), and by Stage C the reverse reaches late state while a die crack crosses the forehead and hair to the Y of LIBERTY. Stage D marks an obverse die change — the worn reverse paired with a fresh obverse in early die state under UVC-1872 and DMR-049. This die change documents the Mint's practice of extending reverse die life by mating it with a new obverse when the original wore out. The 1944 Washington Quarter was struck during World War II, and the strong doubling across the complete reverse legend makes DDR-002 one of the more prominent doubled die reverses for this wartime date.
