1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-030

Description

Listed by VarietyVista under UVC-533 / DMR-031, this 1944 wartime silver alloy Jefferson nickel displays a P mint mark repunched to the north, designated P/P North. A repunched mint mark occurs when the mint mark punch was applied to the working die more than once in slightly different positions, leaving traces of the initial impression visible on struck coins. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A represents the early die state, though it remains unconfirmed. By Stage B, the reverse reaches mid-die state and a die clash becomes visible through the knot area. Stage C is cataloged as late die state, also unconfirmed. The wartime Jefferson nickels of 1943-1945 used a 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese alloy, with the large P mint mark placed above Monticello on the reverse to distinguish them from standard nickel-alloy issues. Repunched mint mark varieties on these wartime issues are collected as a specialized subset, and the northward displacement of the secondary P impression on RPM-030 provides a clear directional diagnostic for attribution.
