1944 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Combining Class II and Class VI doubling mechanisms — distorted hub and distended hub respectively — WDDR-003 on the 1944 Jefferson nickel produces visually compelling spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and FIVE CENTS, with the doubling intensity increasing from left to right across the reverse inscriptions. No obverse die markers were noted. Reverse markers include several die scratches above and to the lower right of the small left window on Monticello, a die gouge inside the second U of UNUM, and a curved die gouge above the right semicircular arch. The combination of two doubling classes on a single die — Class II (distorted hub, where the hub physically changes shape between impressions) and Class VI (distended hub, where the hub expands slightly due to metal fatigue or thermal effects) — produces a complex doubling geometry where the secondary image is simultaneously shifted and scaled relative to the primary. The left-to-right increasing intensity gradient indicates the displacement vector was oriented such that rightward design elements experienced progressively greater deviation between the two hub impressions. Struck during the wartime silver alloy period in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese, the 1944 nickel carries the large P mintmark above Monticello's dome. The die gouge inside the second U of UNUM provides a particularly convenient attribution marker, as its position within a letter form makes it resistant to confusion with planchet marks or post-strike damage.
