1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-029

Description

Cataloged as UVC-501 and DMR-030, the 1944-P Jefferson Nickel RPM-029 shows a P/P West repunched mintmark, the initial large P punch having been placed east of the intended position before the corrected punch was applied, leaving a secondary impression to the west. Three die stages are recorded: Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B is mid die state (unconfirmed); Stage C shows both obverse and reverse at late die state. The westward direction of the secondary impression distinguishes RPM-029 from the eastward RPM-006, southward RPM-014, and triple-punch RPM-007 also cataloged for the 1944-P wartime silver nickel. Struck in 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese, the 1944-P Jefferson Nickel was produced during the penultimate year of the wartime alloy program.
